I once had a long, narrow living room with five doors and an off-center fireplace. I picked a ‘hero line’ — the longest clean wall — and aligned the biggest piece to it, then ‘floated the sofa’ on one large rug with a slim console behind to fake symmetry; if that reads too stiff, swap the console for two ottomans to keep the walkways clear.
